I love makeup. I probably wear too much but I can’t help it, I feel naked without it. When it comes to embracing natural products, makeup is definitely the hardest thing for me to give up and unfortunately good natural makeup brands are still few and far between.

There is light at the end of the tunnel however in the form of Bare Escentuals and their bareMinerals makeup range. The products are 100% pure – free from perservatives, talc, oil, waxes, fragrances and other chemicals which can irritate skin. Because they’re so pure the products are suitable for sensitive skin and problem skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. They come in the form of what looks like loose powder, but is actually crushed minerals from the earth. When applied to the skin the minerals melt in like a soft cream.

The bareMinerals range began with their award winning foundations that have inspired the recent trend in mineral makeup (I haven’t yet tried the foundation but it’s definitely next on my list); also in the range are eye colours, mascaras, brushes, lip sticks and lip glosses. (Read my review of their limited edition Pink Lemonade lipgloss here.)

Since I love the ethos of the line, I was thrilled to be asked to review one of bareMinerals’ new eye palettes due to be released in December – just in time for Christmas. The ‘Fabulous Eyecolor Palette’ (fyi, it’s spelt the American way, not my typo!) contains four ‘Plum Perfect’ eyecolours in a compact with mirror and mini double ended brush. The colours are (from left to right):  Strawberry Mousse, a very pale, almost translucent pink ; Champagne, a soft, pale grey, Plush Purple, a deep plummy purple, and Deep Amethyst, a dark, almost black, aubergine-grey. All the colours have a shimmery finish – giving a flattering glow but not an overly glammed up glittery look. You can use the colours for day or night depending on how much you use and the look you create.

For once my camera has captured the colours quite accurately so the photo above is a pretty good depiction of the shades (click to enlarge). I love them all! I like the brush too. As you can see it has a small head on one end which is good for blending and applying the first three shades. It’s incredibly soft too – possibly the sofest hairs I’ve felt on an eye makeup brush. It’s great for travel although I usually use my own slighly bigger brushes when at home as it’s faster. The other thinner, tapered ended brush works brilliantly to apply the darkest shade as an eyeliner; it’s thin and pointy enough to be really accurate with the line to create a finished look, which you can layer on as you wish to create either a soft daytime look or a stronger look for the evening. Below you can see how I’ve applied the colours in the palette to create what is for me a daytime look, but if that’s too much for you, you could easily create a much barer finish by using less product and/or avoiding the darker shades.

I’m not usually a fan of loose powder eye shadows as I find they usually go everywhere and are hard to blend. But these are completely different to any I’ve tried. The bareMinerals powders are absolutely beautiful to apply and blend perfectly, plus they feel really soft and silky on your skin. And they aren’t as messy as I’d thought they’d be. The powder is denser than a talc based product and sticks together when you apply on the brush so I find there’s very little fallout. With the lighter two shades I just dip straight in and get started. However I would advise creating a ‘guard’ with loose translucent powder if you’re going to use the darker shades in excess as the colour is very rich, and if it drops, it’s a pain to get off (to create the ‘guard’, just generously dab on loose powder with a blusher brush below your eyes and along your cheekbones, then flick it off when you’re finished applying your eye makeup).

All in all, I absolutely love this palette. It’s perfect for me as it has a base/neutral colour which is essential for creating any look, day or night, and the darkest shade is such a lovely alternative to using eyeliner to achieve a sexy, smoky-eye look. The shimmery grey and plum purple are also beautiful. Plus, I like the packaging; it’s really compact so  it doesn’t waste a lot of space in your bag and I love that it comes with a mirror and the very useful double-ended brush. To avoid mess and spillage, the individual pots of colour nestle inside the palette, and when you close it, they get safely locked tight as the lid of the palette has circular portruding bits, so it’s totally secure.

The Fabulous Eyecolor Palette will be available in December and costs £20. I’d totally recommend adding to your Christmas list!
