A few weeks ago I was offered the chance to try Imedeen Hair & Nails, a new supplement containing silica, biotin and B vitamins, designed to strengthen and fortify hair and nails. It couldn’t have come at a better time as I was getting frustrated about my hair losing its thickness as I’ve gotten older. I was also mid-way through trialling Rahua Haircare, which definitely made matters worse!
This will not be my final review on Imedeen as, with any supplement, you need to give it at least a couple of months to judge results, but I thought I would introduce the product now that I am about 4 weeks into taking the tablets. Imedeen Hair & Nails contains the following nutrients with the specific purpose of strengthening hair and nails.
Silica – Silica is a compound of silicon and oxygen – the two most abundant elements on the earth’s crust. Silicon is present in the human body in your connective tissues, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and blood vessels and plays a vital role in keeping them healthy. It’s also required for maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails. Some studies have shown that silicon can help treat osteoporosis and bone fractures and silicon is also important for maintaining the health of your teeth. So, pretty important then!
Silicon levels naturally reduce with age which contributes to the signs of aging – collagen and elastin (which keep your skin taught) are both rich in silicon. One of the signs of this aging is weakening nails and hair. Therefore it’s important to supplement depleted levels of silicon especially as you get older. The silica in Imedeen is derived from horsetail and bamboo extract.
Biotin –Biotin, or Vitamin H, is involved in the metabolic process by aiding in the synthesis and utilization of glycogen and amino acids (the makeup of all cells). It’s thought to be vital in the development of healthy fetuses and babies. Biotin also helps maintain the health of your skin, hair, blood, nervous tissue and sex organs. Biotin a can help treat dermatitis and dandruff as it promotes hair follicle formation and fatty acid metabolism.
B vitamin complex – You’re probably already aware of the importance of B vitamins in your health. Imedeen contains vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (panthotenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), and B12 (cyanocobalamin). The B vitamins play very important roles in your metabolic processes and in maintaining the health of your nervous system. They are essential for health and in some cases deficiency can be life threatening (especially with thiamine). These nutrients are present in many foods – often in whole grain foods and leafy vegetables – therefore a diet of highly processed foods could easily lead to deficiencies. Vitamin B6 is especially important in slowing the aging process as it is vital in supporting the immune system.
So, it’s safe to say that Imedeen has created a vitamin tablet with some of the most vital nutrients needed for healthy hair and nails. And does it work? Well, as I said above, I feel it’s too early to have a definitive answer. However, I do believe that my hair has felt thicker and stronger since taking them and I have noticed less hair fall out when brushing. My nails are also extremely strong at the moment and I’ve hardly had any breakages recently. I will update again in another few weeks, but so far so good!
I have always believed in the importance of beauty from the inside out and supplements should be the first step to improving the look of your skin, hair and nails. I’d urge anyone with thinning hair, bad skin or weak nails to consider the state of your diet and identify any possible nutrient deficiencies. It can’t hurt to take a supplement because eating the perfect balance of nutrients every day is a challenge which most of us fail to live up to unfortunately.
